Christmas Eve 2007
Reflections on the Birthplace
by Rev. Dr. Jim Carlson
Luke 2: 1-20
Humble birth stories – “The Jerk”
Stories of heroes – humble beginnings with inklings of greatness.
Luke is not recounting history.
Setting the story of Jesus within known events
Inventory of Judea 6-7AD
Caesar Augustus 27BC to 14AD
Joseph and Mary from Nazareth
Messiah of David’s line, born in Bethlehem.
Wants to be as historically reliable as possible
Wants to emphasize Jesus as savior to the whole world.
Birth took place during census of Roman Empire
Angels say Jesus’ birth will be known around the world.
Even stars are involved in announcing his birth.
Wants to emphasize Jesus’ ministry to the poor and humble.
Circumstances dictated by earthly powers
Parents couldn’t find an in when he was delivered
Baby placed in feeding trough for livestock
Birth is announced by angels to poor shepherds
Why would Luke describe Jesus’ birth as a worldwide event?
Christian movement is not isolated to Jewish people. Good news for all people.
Christian faith is not a front to civil government. Faith is not primarily
expressed through revolution.
Why emphasize Jesus’ solidarity with the poor and humble?
Christian faith is set in opposition to manmade hierarchies. God doesn’t make
distinctions.
God can’t really by in solidarity with the poor unless Jesus is one of them.
Church can’t either.
Final Illustration – Steve Flaig – given up for adoption at birth – mother not
ready.
She left her information available.
He began searching – spelled her name wrong.
Found right name – Christine Tallady computer said mom was close by.
Asked his boss, Boss said she worked at Lowe’s.
Miracle of Christmas is Christ’s humanity and humility.
Teaches us something about the Christian faith.
Light of Christ still shines today. Let’s light the candles and reflect on God’s
unity with humanity.
