Dare to Have Compassion

by Rev. Dr. Jim Carlson

1 Kings 17:8-16

Should we dare to be supportive of people who are reputed to be our opponents?

Issue facing widow in today’s story. Encounter with Elijah.

Historical Setting – Author blamed national sin for famine.

Feeding by Ravens

Famine – starvation in Israel. Elijah withdraws to Zarephath.

Asks for drink; asks for bread. Woman protests. Promises her source of food until rain falls again.

God of Israel must be more powerful than Baal. Elijah lived with her – risks punishment by Baal.

Story often used to promote the idea that God always provides for the godly. Interpretation raises problems.

Raises issue of compassion – sometimes very risky.

What is at risk? Own family; relationship to community; worldview.

Jesus notes the risk and hospitality of this woman. God’s blessing upon people who reach out to people outside their circle.

Issue of Immigration – How will we respond to immigrant population in our society?

Religious issues have been raised – will our acceptance of non-evangelicals bring God’s wrath on us?

Immigration bill in doubt. No one likes it. Left or Right.

Reaching out to undocumented immigrants is risky. But the presence of our Hispanic congregation has been like the oil and the flour that sustains us.

Will you dare to be compassionate?
