Remember Your Humble
Beginnings
by Rev. Dr. Jim Carlson
2 Samuel 5:1-10
Story of transition from Saul’s kingship to David. Saul dies in battle. David
was either captain of 1000 men or general of Saul’s army. (slide)
People of Judah anoint him king at Hebron. Challenged by weak son of Saul –
Eshbaal/Ishbosheth. Abner tries to have him recognized.
Lots of mistrust. David does not want to be accused of plotting against
Ishbosheth. Northerners loyal to Saul were suspicious of David.
Ishbosheth accuses Abner of taking Saul’s concubines. Abner transfers loyalty to
David. Both Abner and Ishbosheth are killed.
David is unquestionably king, but still a vassal of Philistines. Israel’s
leaders approach David to make covenant.
Self-protection needed for independence from Philistines. David named king of
Israel and Judah.
Called “shepherd”. Later used of leaders. Here is a reminder of David’s humble
beginnings as a shepherd.
Recognition of God’s spirit blessing David’s leadership.
Sounds like bloody power struggle and factional infighting. People of Israel saw
this as God establishing God’s people in the land promised to Abraham.
Focus on humble beginnings. Two things we learn about ourselves:
First – we can never really leave behind who we are. David remained shepherd;
just led a new flock.
Tendency in some churches to emphasize Christianity as new start. Good
scriptural basis.
What changes is our understanding of our relationship to God and others. Who we
are remains. God created us and we are good.
Second – People out there who need nurture and wisdom and guidance. Cannot be
too self-important to reach out to them.
Visit to shut-ins – Too busy to shepherd them. Need to stop being king and do
more shepherding.
