Son of Encouragement
by Rev. Dr. Jim Carlson
Acts 11:19-30
Background on Barnabas: from Cyprus; Levite,
priest.
Somehow came to be associated with church in Jerusalem. Joseph, nicknamed
Barnabas. Son of encouragement.
Brought Paul to fearful disciples in Jerusalem.
Spread of gospel to gentiles – Phillip, Peter in Caesarea; affirmed by Apostles
in Jerusalem.
Stoning of Stephen caused scattering of Christians. Some went to Antioch.
Initially evangelism only limited to Jews. In Antioch Christians began preaching
to gentiles. Lots of gentiles believed in Jesus.
Church in Jerusalem hears about missionary activity. Sends Barnabas to Antioch.
Barnabas saw effects of God’s presence in new community. Encouraged them to keep
faithful.
Job became so big he needed help. Went and got Paul.
Barnabas and Paul worked with church for one year.
More help from Jerusalem – Prophets – Agabus.
Response to prophecy – Collection of first disaster relief offering by
Christians. Unclear which famine is being described.
Money taken to Jerusalem by Paul and Barnabas.
Two points: First – Ministry in Antioch not the result of strategic planning by
church board.
Fallout of tragedy spurs new avenues of ministry.
Church has to look at where God is working in the congregation and affirm it.
Second – Mother church forced to accept help from church plant. Happened on
larger scale with Paul.
American church must have humility to realize it is not the center of God’s
saving work.
We have as much to learn and receive as we do to teach and give.
Katrina relief offering from Japanese Baptists - $15,000 to ABC. 2nd offering.
Church of Christ in Thailand gave $2500 to ABC.
